Day 59 zero in mammoth
The last stretch was particularly brutal on us. So we all decided to take the day off. We took our time buying food, and eating food. Watching copious amounts of Netflix and drinking beer. ACB and I made everyone poutine the best we could as we were craving it, and got ready to roll out the next day.
Day 60 20mile to Lake
The morning we packed up, and I headed off on my own to get coffee and deal with the post office. I had a package from zpacks to repair my tent, and had to mail food ahead. We all ended up at the coffee shop, and planned out our day. While waiting for the bus we got a trail angel pick us up and take us back to the trail head. We finally were hiking by 1130. We made quick work of the 4 mile trail back to the pct, and noticed significant snow melting already with the heat we finally were getting. We chose to do an alternative trail to go by a National monument hummer really wanted to see call Devils Postpile. We hiked on because of the bugs, and found a spot to eat a little further down the trail. We decided due to the pass we had to do the next day to try and get as close as possible to it. Hiking 20 miles starting at noon is not ideal, and once we got into some snow and slowed down it really made things worse. Eventually we got to the lake we planned on, and found there to be significant snow still. So we found Salty on some big rocks, and set up with him. By this time it had gotten dark and we had another early morning, so we immediately went to bed. Daily milage-20m
Day 61 hike to Yosemite
We woke up, broke camp, and started to move. This pass we did was named Donohue Pass. At the very top of the pass is the Yosemite National Park border. We crossed the pass, and started to descend. Getting some fun glisades, I also learned not to glisade in shorts....I definitely got ice burn on my ass. We got down and came up to a river, my feet were so wet I just walked through the river. As I crossed it a Park Ranger came out from behind a tree, and she checked out PCT permits. I was warned that Yosemite would be where you get checked, and we were checked within 30 minutes of being inside the park. What are the chances. We ate some breakfast, and kept moving, quickly dropping down into a beautiful Valley where we followed a river for about 10 miles. We had lunch beside the river and made plans for the valley, and moved on. While hiking we got seperated, ACB and I waited at the road we planned to hitch at for 2 hours before deciding we needed to get down to the valley. We quickly got picked up by a big group going to the same campsite we were. So we got a ride all the way down to where we were going. Once down there they gave us a tonne of food as they decided they had packed too much. We ate, and made plans for the next day.
Day62 zero in Yosemite
We woke up at 530, to get packed up and walk to camp 4 to try and get a spot. Camp 4 is the only drop in only site, so you need to be there early. We were the second to last pair to get a spot and we were there at 615. At 8 the line slowly started moving, and we also got ahold of the group we knew were in the valley (Pacecar, Groover, 2meals, seeker, and Nuts). We finally got our camp permit, and met up with the whole other crew. We went over to ElCap, and hiked up to it. 2meals and I were extremely sad we couldn't climb it. We got lunch, and beer, and ended up hanging out on a beach for a few hours drinking. We eventually made our way over to Half dome village and decided to get some pizza. While we were deciding on pizza, 2 meals met an employee who hiked the PCT last year. She demanded to buy us dinner, so we accepted...of course. We had a good talk with her, and then eventually ACB and I made our way back to camp 4 where we went to sleep.
